Glen Shortliffe
Prior to co-founding Sussex Circle in 1994, Glen
Shortliffe was Clerk of the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet,
and Head of the Public Service. In his 32 years in government, Mr.
Shortliffe also served as Deputy Minister of Transport and Deputy
Secretary to the Cabinet (Operations). He had many years of experience
in the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Canadian International
Development Agency including an appointment as Ambassador to Indonesia.
In 1999, Mr. Shortliffe was appointed Special
Advisor on Restructuring to the Government of Ontario. In this role he
prepared the report on local government reform that led to the creation
of an amalgamated City of Ottawa. From 2001 to 2004, Mr Shortliffe
served as Chair of Hydro Ottawa.
Mr. Shortliffe is a graduate of the University of
Alberta and the University of Oregon. He is recognized as a leading
Canadian expert on public management, government organization and
organizational renewal.
Harry Swain
Former partner Harry Swain has served as Senior
Managing Director, Corporate and Investment Banking,
Société Générale (Canada) and before that
as CEO of Hambros Canada Inc. and a Director of Hambros Bank Limited
(UK), where he specialized in project finance.
Earlier, Mr. Swain held a number of senior
positions in the federal public service, including those of Deputy
Minister of Industry and Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern
Development.
Mr. Swain holds a Ph.D. from the University of
Minnesota.
Grant Reuber
Grant Reuber became a Sussex Circle Advisor in
1999 following a distinguished career in banking, government, and the
academic world. At the Bank of Montreal, Mr. Reuber served as President
and Chief Operating Officer as well as Deputy Chairman. He had
previously served as Deputy Minister of Finance in the Government of
Canada. In his earlier academic career, he was a distinguished
Professor of Economics at the University of Western Ontario, where he
later served as Provost and Chancellor. Most recently, Mr. Reuber was
Chairman of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Mr. Reuber was educated at the Universities of
Western Ontario, Harvard, and Cambridge and has been awarded honorary
degrees by the Universities of Wilfrid Laurier, Simon Fraser, Western
Ontario, and McMaster. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a
member of the Royal Society of Canada.
James Baillie
James Baillie is Counsel to the law firm of Torys
of Toronto and New York and is based in their Toronto office. A former
Chair of the Ontario Securities Commission, he is currently the
non-executive Chair of the Independent Electricity Market Operator, the
not-for-profit entity that operates and regulates the wholesale
electricity market in Ontario. He is also a Director of Sun Life
Financial.
Mr. Baillie was educated at the Universities of
Toronto, Harvard, and Cambridge. He is a leading business lawyer and
has had, during his career, many senior involvements in relationships
between the public and private sectors. He is particularly active in
financial institutions law and merger and acquisitions.
